Crown Moulding (Cornice)
A crown moulding is a ceiling/wall trim, sometimes referred to as a cornice. It is a decorative band placed where the wall meets the ceiling and enriches a room by eliminating plain corners.
When selecting a moulding, keep in mind the room’s size and style. The ceiling height is the key factor in determining the size of the crown moulding.
A crown moulding that is too small for a room will be lost in the vastness of the wall and ceiling surfaces. One that is too large will overwhelm the eye. Use the table below to select the correct crown moulding size:
Picture | Ceiling height | Crown moulding profile Projection (P) x Height (H) |
8’-0” | 5”x 5” (± 1” on P or H)
9’-0” | 7”x 7” (± 1 ½” on P or H)
10’-0” | 9”x 9” (± 2” on P or H)
11’-0” | 11”x 11” (± 2 ½” on P or H)
12’-0” | 13”x 13” (± 3” on P or H) |
The projection and height of a crown moulding do not need to be equal. For example, for an 8-foot-high ceiling we suggest a 5”x 5” moulding, which can be reduced to a 4” x 4” moulding, or even a 6” projection and 4” height. A well-chosen crown moulding respects a room’s overall proportions.
